In articles we have talked about getting your web site listed with the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. This time I want to take a few minutes to go to the next level; getting your site found by people who are searching for you. I will cover one of the easiest and helpful methods in this article.

 

The Title Tag

This is one of those things that few people really know about  or utilize properly. However, it can have a big impact on getting your site found by web searchers. Many of you are probably wondering what the title tag is. Simply put, the title tag is just what it sound like, the title description of your web page. If you look in the bar at the top of your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc) there is a title.

Many times the title will be simply one word, such as "Home" or "About". Sometimes it may be the name of your company, such as, "Welcome to My Company Name". This type of title tag is just not very helpful for someone who is searching for a service. They may find you if they are looking for your company specifically, but not if they are trying to check out companies in the area that offer your services or products.

The title tag plays an important role in being found. This is one of the top things that many of the search engines look at for your site's relevance to the search terms that people enter. Will changing this give our site the top ranking? Probably not, but it is a good start and if your title is currently not very strong then it will definitely increase your standing.
